I never thought I would need a meal kit delivery service because I am a good cook and make most of the meals for my small family. Recipes? I don’t use them very often. I only buy things that look good in stores. After that, my skills and imagination take care of the rest. I’m still busy, though, so I don’t cook anything too complicated or new very often. Most days, I just want meals that are quick, tasty, and good for me. I thought that if I used a meal kit service, I’d probably want one that met those goals even better: meals that were either super quick or already made, meals that were highly creative with new ingredients, meals that were as healthy as yoga, or a mix of the three. So when I recently had the chance to try Dinnerly, a cheap service with simple meals that everyone loves, I wasn’t expecting to be hooked.

The five dinner kits for two that Dinnerly sent me really changed my mind. For lunch and dinner, I made three kits. I shocked my wife and daughter by what a great time we all had sharing them with them. Overall, I was surprised by how much value the service delivered added. I’ve never been so tempted to sign up for a meal kit delivery service.

How do I get Dinnerly?

Dinnerly was created in 2017 by the parent company Marley Spoon. Its main service is delivering food kits, but it also has a lot of different add-ons that include ready-made meals. You can buy up to six kits per week, and each kit serves two to four people. The recipes are meant to be easy, and some can be made in as few as three steps. Dinnerly has one of the biggest weekly menus and the lowest price per serving of any meal kit delivery service.

How does it work?

Dinnerly delivers once a week, but you can easily skip weeks if you’d rather not get food as often. There are three fulfilment centres in the United States: one on the East Coast, one in Texas, and one on the West Coast. These centres ship to most of the mainland United States.

You don’t have to make an account to look through Dinnerly’s extensive four-week schedule. To get to the menu, click “View Menu.” It’s easy to place an order if you decide to. You will first pick how many meals you want and how many plates you need. There is also a box to check if you are a vegetarian. You can change your mind at any time, so don’t stress. After that, you’ll give your location, email address, and delivery address. Finally, you’ll pick a day for delivery. After that, you’ll enter your payment information. Last, you’ll pick the food that will be delivered for the first time.

From now on, Dinnerly will choose your meals for you every week. One of the options for your account has a link that says “edit taste profile.” That’s where you can change the kinds of food that Dinnerly chooses for you. You can pick the types of proteins you eat, make your meals meatless, and decide if you like spicy food or not. And if you don’t want to eat certain things, like gluten or dairy, you’ll need to use your browser’s “Find” tool to look for those tags on Dinnerly’s menu page.

There are six or seven days after your delivery date, based on where you live, that you can make your own meal choices. From Dinnerly’s “Market” page, click “edit recipes,” pick out your meals, and then click “continue.” You can choose up to 10 extras there. There are eight types of add-ons: breakfast and brunch, drinks and smoothies, fresh fruits and veggies, lunch, meal shortcuts, the pantry, and ready-made meals and sides. Breakfast egg bites, health shakes, raw asparagus, soups, gnocchi, extra-virgin olive oil, and a ready-made meal variety pack are some of the things you’ll see.

How much

Dinnerly’s prices depend on how many items you order. The prices for the meals run from about $8 to $5 per serving. There are extra fees of 50 cents to $7 dollars added to the base price of each serving for meals in the “PremiYUM” menu group. Add-ons cost anywhere from about $1 for a head of garlic to $43 for a four-pack of ready-to-eat meals in a box. It cost me $76.39 to ship five basic meal kits, which are enough for ten servings. That being said, I thought it was a good deal.

Dinnerly has a bigger range than most meal kit delivery services, with about 100 different main dishes every week. For easy access, the menu is split into nine groups. The company puts labels on its kits that say things like “vegan,” “low-calorie,” “kid-friendly,” “low-carb,” “gluten-free,” “dairy-free,” “one-pot meal,” and more. You might even find a keto-friendly meal now and then. With so many meals, you’d expect a lot of different kinds, and Dinnerly doesn’t let you down. There is pizza, pasta, burgers, soup, tacos, salads, bowls, stir-fries, and regular main dishes with meats and sides. Protein amounts aren’t very big—about four ounces at most. The meals are healthy and filling at the same time, and many of them can be changed to fit your needs. Like the chicken parm, it can come with green beans, zucchini or broccoli. You can get brown, jasmine, or ready-to-heat rice with the chicken korma curry kit.

My Dinnerly kits came in a regular cardboard box that can be recycled. The food stayed cool while it was being shipped with a big ice pack and a silver bubble wrap insulation bag. Based on where you live, Dinnerly says that shipping can be different, so instead of the bubble liner I got, you might get an encapsulated cotton liner or a thermal liner.

Everything comes in fresh. Proteins and a lot of veggies come in plastic bags that are sealed. Foods with thick skins, like cucumbers, tomatoes, and potatoes, did not come with extra packing. Seasonings, sauces, and other foodstuffs usually come in single-use containers like plastic tubs, pouches, and cans. Most plastic bags are either #4 or #1. Anyone can find recycling directions at the bottom of the company’s website under the “recycling” link.

How to Cook

Dinnerly really shines when it comes to the cooking part. For the most part, the job felt easy and straightforward. It was simple to read and understand the methods. Cutting up broccoli and garlic with a knife was all I had to do to put together my meal kits. Also, cooking was easy—there were only a few steps and common methods like pan-frying, baking in the oven, steaming, broiling, and sometimes microwaving were used. I was able to plate the meals in the time I thought I would.

A few easy changes made a big difference in how the dishes turned out. For example, the recipe for ginger chicken and rice noodle soup called for making homemade Szechuan-style chilli oil in a simple, easy way. The steak dish had a tasty crust made of pastrami spices. I had to use oil, butter, garlic, sugar, salt, pepper, vinegar, and some other things from my kitchen to follow the recipes. One last thing: you will only get digital recipe cards. You’ll have to print it yourself if you’d rather have a hard copy.

  • Feel Good

Dinner was pretty good overall. The flavor-to-effort ratio was also very good. This service makes sure that every meal is greater than the sum of its parts. The idea of a steak and baked potato isn’t very new, but the spices and compound butter made it a very delicious meal. The fish I had was fresh and flaky. The homemade chilli oil made the ginger chicken rice noodle soup taste even better. The Indian veggie curry was a big hit with my wife and 8-year-old daughter. The BBQ-glazed pork tenderloin was probably the least interesting dish, but it was so easy to make that I didn’t mind that the flavours weren’t very exciting. When you think about it, Dinnerly’s kits were well worth the work.

Do you want to use Dinnerly?

Dinnerly is for busy families and couples who like to cook but don’t have time to plan meals or follow complicated recipes. Dinnerly can be very useful if you like a lot of different foods and don’t have any big dietary restrictions. But there are so many to choose from that you can make your Dinnerly plan fit your needs. When things get busy, add some extra meals that are already made. To make things more interesting, you can use Dinnerly’s tips and your own ideas to make their basic recipes more interesting if things slow down. But Dinnerly isn’t a great choice for people who follow more specific diets, like keto or paleo. Also, people who are allergic or sensitive to certain foods will likely choose a service that has stricter rules about things like nuts and gluten.

Last Thoughts

Dinnerly surprised me in a good way. I like food and I’m a good cook, so I thought Dinnerly would be too boring to be worth the time, money, and effort. Even though the recipes were simple, they were well-thought-out, quick, tasty, and very cheap. I felt better during my week with Dinnerly because I knew that a tasty meal was only a few easy steps away.
